A naked woman covered in gold paint left motorists confused as she walked down the middle of a street.

The mystery woman turned heads and stopped traffic as she wandered down a busy dual carriageway.

Police were alerted after passers-by became concerned for her welfare.

One motorist told how he nearly crashed his car when he saw the woman on his way to work.

The woman was spotted in Mere Way, Northampton, at about 11am on Monday morning.

Jess Hornsey, 17, who was driving to nearby Abington at the time of the incident, said: "I was a bit worried for her.

Another witness said a motorist driving a black BMW managed to make sure the woman was safely out of the road before police arrived at the scene.

A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "We were alerted by a member of the public who had seen a woman walking along Mere Way.

"We attended and she was taken to Northampton General Hospital."
