scaphism: the most brutal tortures ever done in history

One of the most infamous and horrific acts of torture in history was the method known as “scaphism.” Originating in ancient Persia, this form of punishment was reserved for the most heinous criminals or enemies of the state. While it is undoubtedly a disturbing topic, I will provide a factual account without sensationalizing the details.

Scaphism, also called “the boats,” involved trapping the victim within two narrow boats or hollowed-out tree trunks. The unfortunate individual would be placed inside, their head, hands, and feet protruding. The boats would then be tightly bound together, leaving only the head and extremities exposed.

The intention behind scaphism was to prolong the suffering of the victim as much as possible. The boats would be left floating on stagnant water, exposing the person to a variety of unbearable conditions. Over time, the stagnant water would attract insects, which would lay eggs and breed. As the larvae hatched, they would feast on the victim’s exposed flesh.

In addition to the relentless insect infestation, the condemned would also be force-fed a mixture of milk and honey. This diet was deliberately chosen to induce diarrhea, further attracting insects and creating an unsanitary environment. The combination of physical discomfort, infection, and dehydration made the process agonizingly slow and excruciating.

The prolonged exposure to these conditions would lead to a multitude of afflictions. Gangrene, infections, sepsis, and other diseases would set in, causing severe pain and ultimately leading to a painful death. The psychological torment inflicted by the knowledge of one’s impending fate only added to the horror.

While scaphism was primarily associated with ancient Persia, there are recorded instances of similar methods being used in other cultures throughout history. The purpose of such punishments was not only to inflict physical suffering but also to serve as a deterrent to others, instilling fear and maintaining control over the population.
