The Soviet armies advancing into East Prussia in January 1945, in huge, long columns, were an extraordinary mixture of modern and medieval: tank troops in padded black helmets, Cossack cavalrymen on shaggy mounts with loot strapped to the saddle, lend-lease Studebakers and Dodges towing light field guns, and then a second echelon in horse-drawn carts.

The variety of character among the soldiers was almost as great as that of their military equipment. There were freebooters who drank and raped quite shamelessly, and there were idealistic, austere communists and members of the intelligentsia appalled by such behaviour.

Mass rapes, mass murders, mas torturing civilians did not concern only German women. Soviets did the same to civilians in all countries they occupied, and regardless of nationality.

Russians now tend to justify the mass raping, saying that nazis did it, too.

Even more important than the numbers, is to understand why they did it and did they saw it as justified and was it planned by the leaders, or was it just misbehavior of undisciplined soldiers?

Did nazis mass raped civilians in occupied Austria, France, Hungary? Poland?

If they did it so only in Russia, why the difference, if they did, did they saw it justified?

Nazis were motivated to keep order in occupied territories. Any mass rap!ng of civilians does not help to ensure the loyalty of civilians to the government and does not help to control the territory.

I have not heard or read any attempt by nazis to justify raping or torturing even jews. What would be the motivation?

Russians mass-murdered and rap£d civilians in Poland and Baltic states already before Nazies entered the territory of the Soviet Union. Violence against those who were considered capitalists seemed morally justified to the soldiers, as capitalists who own factories or peasants who own their land were dehumanized. Violence was tactically right to destroy social ties between people. And then, destroying everything was ordered by Moscow, as part of its burned land tactics.

Russians really considered mass-murdering civilians justified, and nothing could stop it. The same justifying continues nowadays.
